Here we are on this momentous day, standing at the threshold that all must one day face. We are here to say farewell to one of the sweetest, most loving women this world has ever known.

Dorothy Singleton entered this world on  Saturday, November 4, 1933. Dorothy was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the only girl and the next to last child of Julius and Minnie Fulton. Like most southern born African-Americans, Dorothy was raised by her parents with a deep sense of cultural dignity, self-respect, and familial duty.

Dorothy would work to instill the same values in her only son, Wes Hanani Shelomo. However, for Dorothy, it was not enough to focus her attention solely on her son: Dorothy became a master teacher. She felt it was her mission to bring wisdom and guidance to the countless students who sat before her each new school year with wide-eyed innocence.  Many of those same students still sing Dorothy's praises today. She not only touched their minds, she captured their hearts.

Heaven has regained an angel. Those who loved her have the blessed memory of her beautiful, elegant grace. The world feels just a bit more hollow now that she has returned home. Those who knew and loved her; who were blessed enough to have ever shared a conversation with her; or a moment in her presence .. know just how much light remains from her presence.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and two of her brothers: Rufus and William aka Tappy.

Dorothy is survived by her son Hanani Shelomo aka Wes, her brother Bobby Fulton, and many nieces, and nephews. Rest well, dear Mother. Rest well.

    Dorothy, you were such a lovely person. We met once at a doll convention in Philadelphia many years ago but we communicated via our online doll club, We Love Black Dolls, for many years. At every encounter you were always positive, always fun, always happy. It was such a pleasure to know you. The members of WLBD and WLBDA will keep your memory alive through the love of dolls! Rest in Heavenly Peace.

  4. Joy Fulton says:

    Rest well our beautiful Queen~Proverbs 31 Woman!

    Proverbs 31:25-31 (NKJV)
    25 Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
    26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
    27 She watches over the ways of her household,And does not eat the bread of idleness.28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;Her husband also, and he praises her:29 “Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,And let her own works praise her in the gates.

    Dorothy was a long-time member of my Black doll collectors group. I had the pleasure of communicating with her online for two decades about our shared passion for collecting Black dolls where she was always pleasant, sweet, and supportive of everyone. I met her in person in 2004 at the Philadelphia Black Doll Show where she proved to be even more pleasant in person than her online presence. I will miss her sweet disposition, her wisdom, and her willingness to always support. We have lost a living angel that heaven has gained.

    My condolences are extended to Wes, her brother, and all who knew and loved her. Rest well, my friend. I will forever remember you.
