Elva Esther Madison Duncan, 95, of Jackson, NJ peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday August 10, 2024. She was born August 16, 1928, in Reevytown, NJ to the late Alexander Madison and Madeline Victoria Reevey Madison. Elva graduated from Red Bank High School, Red Bank, NJ. After High School, Elva entered a nursing school receiving diploma as Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, Marlboro, NJ for 45 years. She also worked at Bridgeway House, Red Bank in the Methadone program.

Mrs. Duncan was an active member of Jackson Senior Citizens, which she enjoyed. Every year at the Tinton Falls Fair, Elva was there with her homemade ice cream and spinning wheel to paint pictures. She was a proud and faithful member of St. Thomas AME Zion Church, Tinton Falls, NJ her entire 95 years. Being the eldest member of the church, she was respectfully known as the “Mother of St. Thomas AME Zion.” Elva was faithful in all her church duties as senior choir member, church clerk, church historian, custodian of church records, annual conference delegate, women’s day chairperson, missionary society, class leader, honorary trustee, building fund and parsonage committees. She loved her church family and loved to sing. In fact, Elva often sang with her mother and sister.

Affectionately known as Essie to all that knew her. She was a compassionate and caring person who loved the Lord and her family.

Elva was predeceased by husbands Benjamin Duncan, Harold Brooks, Robert McGirt, sons Robert Larry McGirt, Richard Andre Duncan, parents, brother Alexander Richard, sister Margaret Ann Madison Brown, great grandson Robert Kane McGirt.

Affectionately known as Nana by her grands, she leaves behind to cherish her memory granddaughters Brianna McGirt Rich (Antoine), and Kimberly McGirt; grandsons Bob and David (Lori) Duncan; great and great-great grands, daughters-in-law Brenda Riddick, and Laurel Duncan; nephews Wayne and Larry Brown; niece Wanda Brown; grand nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives, church family and friends.
