Eva Josephine Lewis, affectionately known as “Eva Jo,” passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, September 6, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Eva was born on June 2, 1935, to the late John and Katie Jones in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Eva attended Beaufort Public School system, graduating in 1953.

In 1952, Eva met the late David Lewis Jr. and they were married on September 2, 1955. This union lasted 54 years until his death.

In 1967 Eva joined Union Baptist Missionary Church in Middletown, NJ where she served on various boards. She served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Assistant, President of the Flower Club, President of the Kitchen, Vice President of the Senior Missionary, Chairwoman of the Trustees, and pianist for both the junior and senior choirs. Under the leadership of Reverend Bernard Oaks, she became Mother of the church.

Eva worked for the Borough of Red Bank Public Schools of 27 years, retiring June 30, 2002.

In Eva’s spare time she loved to cook and bake. Some of her favorite things to make that were mouthwatering were, cherry cream cheese pies, sweet potato pies, coconut cakes and her famous BOURBAN BALLS.

Eva was predeceased by her parents John and Katie Jones; husband, David Lewis Jr; son, Desmond H. Lewis; sisters Lillian Savage and Jocelyn Winfield, niece Jessica Winfield.

Eva leaves to cherish her precious memories her sons Derrick W, Red Bank, NJ, David III, Red Bank, NJ, Dwight D (Tressie) Nashville, TN, Dennis C (Pamela) East Windsor, NJ and Dwayne E (Kimberly) Red Bank, NJ; grandchildren Latisha, Deidra, McCall, Arielle, Spenser, Raymond, Diamond, Karly, Darrah, Destiny, Danasia, Donnie, Devron, Earnest, and Anthony; great-grandchildren; brothers John W. Jones, Washington, DC and James H. Jones (Fannie), Morehead, NC; god daughter Samara Johnson; special friend Geraldine Bibbens; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Eva had a very special granddaughter Latisha Lewis; she was more like her daughter.

A note to my Auntie Em, today we say goodbye. My heart hurts but the pain you felt was more. Thank you God for letting her body rest. I would rather you be healed on this side but knowing you are healed in the name of Jesus makes me rejoice.

Until we meet again your special niece.

Evelyn
