Robert graduated from Red Bank High School in 1964 and enlisted in the United States Army where he served for four years. He was assigned the position of drill Sergeant at Fort Dix Army Base until his honorable discharge. He then completed a bachelor’s degree in Special Education at William Paterson College. He was a well known and loved football coach at William Paterson College and at Paterson Kennedy High School.  Many students fondly remember “Sarge” as a “no nonsense” but fair educator.

In 1980 Robert was inducted into the William Paterson College Athletic Hall of Fame. Some of his many accomplishments include: Guided the football program from “club” to “varsity” status in 1972; Captained his club and varsity teams for 3 years; Was named as WPC MVP in 1972; Named to the All-Conference Team in 1972; Rushed for 1,396 career yards with a 5.5 yards average; Returned kick-offs for 604 yards and a 19.5 yards average; Returned a kick-off for a WPC record 95 yards; Drafted by USFL.

He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, Red Bank, NJ and a life member of the American Legion Post 227 of Totowa, NJ and the I.B.P.O.E. of Paterson.

On January 10, 2022, the Lord said to Robert, “It’s time for you to come home.”

He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Goldie Mae Taylor, sisters Julia Straughter, Goldie Taylor, brother Teddy and nephew Jonathan.
