Shirley A. Tutt, 84, of Long Branch, New Jersey, passed away on December 29, 2024, in Long Branch, NJ. Shirley was born in Franklin, North Carolina, on April 22, 1940, to Crezell Marshall Young and Albert Walton. Growing up in Castalia, North Carolina, Shirley worked in the tobacco fields and went to Castalia Baptist Church. She moved in with her paternal grandmother, Lillie Walton Watkins, in Red Bank, NJ, in 1958. She married Clarence Tutt in 1959 and raised her eight amazing children in Long Branch, NJ. She worked in a variety of fields, most notably hospitality. Shirley was renowned for her warmth, boundless affection, and superb baking and cooking skills. She also enjoyed sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and word search puzzle books. She was frequently seen watching game programs on television. Despite not having a driver's license, Shirley continued to travel! She made it anywhere she set her mind to. She had a reputation for being vibrant and could make friends with almost anyone, giving the impression that she had known them for ages.
She was predeceased by her parents, Crezell Marshall Young and Albert Walton, her paternal grandmother, Lillie Walton Watkins, her brother, Albert Walton Jr., her sisters, Peggy Allgood, Hattie Walton, Christina Young, Janie Young Whitaker, her children, Dorothy Tutt, Scott Tutt Sr., and Leroy Tutt Sr., and her grandchildren, Leroy Tutt Jr. and Gregory Tutt Jr.
Left to cherish her memories with internal love her sons, Gregory Tutt Sr. (Syvona Stovall-Tutt) of Keansburg, NJ, Keller Tutt (Beth) of Neptune, NJ; her daughters Mellette Tutt (Richard) of Highlands, NJ, Patricia Tutt of Oceanport, NJ, and Denise Tutt of Long Branch, NJ; Debbie Hayes a beloved daughter-in love; eighteen grandchildren, Tyesha, Stephaine, Robin, Channel, Tasha, Tiffany, Scott Jr., Tisharah, Seairah, Khaysaun Adrianna, Rashawn, Daquan, Iteasha, Jasmine, Jaleesa, Ashley, and Javairia; forty-four great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; her sisters Paulette Walton Crudup, Mozelle Young Williams, and Dorothy Young Arrington; brothers John Young and Larry Walton; David Bass, Wilma Thomas, and Nadine Bass are close friends—more like family. A host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends, as well as numerous more, claimed her as their cherished mother or Grandmother Shirley.
She will be greatly missed by her family. Never forgotten and will always be in our hearts.
