William Carver "Sweet Back" 83, of Long Branch, NJ entered the arms of Jesus, on Monday March 21, 2016 at Monmouth Medical Center.  William was born May 18, 1932 in Portsmouth, VA the youngest of seven to the late Virginia Herbert Carver and Joshua Carver.  He was predeceased by 5 brothers, 1 sister; 2 very special nephews Jimmy Carver, Leon Bateman and a very special niece Mary Virginia Carver.  William was educated in the Portsmouth Public School system in Portsmouth, VA.  He lived in Virginia for 37 years where his favorite cousin Jody introduced him to Jean Lassiter whom he married, from that union 1 daughter was born, Tracy E. Carver.  William later moved to Long Branch, NJ where he made this state his second home for 46 years.  During that time he met many people who became lifetime friends.  On October 28, 1998, he married his current wife Priscilla Sorias.  He accepted Christ as his personal savior at New Berean Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia, on April 2, 1995. He later joined and became a faithful member of St. Thomas AME Zion Church, Tinton Falls, NJ, where he served in the male chorus.  One of his favorite songs to minister was "God's Got It!"  He enjoyed working, even after he retired from Wheelock Paint Corporation.  He was a very kind hearted man who was always willing to help anyone.  He was an avid bowler, pool player, baseball player, card player and fisherman.  He also enjoyed gardening, singing, dancing, trips to the casino, watching westerns and his daughter's inspirational stage plays.  His ultimate joy was being a proud father, grandfather and spending time with family and friends.  William is survived by his wife Priscilla Sorias Carver, his daughter Tracy Carver Pierce (Carl), stepdaughters Jacqueline D. Elliott (James), and Paula G. Lassiter ; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren all of Virginia; 2 nieces Theresa Bateman of Suffolk, VA and Carleen Dukes of Springfield, MA; 4 nephews Darryl, Jerry, Carlton all of New York and Walter Carver of North Carolina and a host of other relatives and friends.
