James Butler, Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and devoted companion, passed away peacefully at his home in Matawan, New Jersey, on July 9, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on May 29, 1940, in Clemson, South Carolina, James was the cherished son of the late James Butler, Sr. and Emma Harriet Butler.

James spent his formative years in Clemson, graduating from Clearview High School in Easley,SC, in 1957. After completing his education, he relocated to Matawan, New Jersey, where he built a rich and fulfilling life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Rice Butler and son, Michael Scott Butler.

A dedicated and hardworking individual, James served as a machine operator for over 20 years at E.I. DuPont. He also worked at Clemson University and Rutgers University. Beyond his professional career, he was a talented landscaper and proud landscape contractor, transforming outdoor spaces with his keen eye and strong work ethic.

James had a vibrant spirit and a wide array of interests. He was an avid sports enthusiast, with a particular love for baseball. He found joy and tranquility in boating and fishing, tending to his garden, exploring yard sales for hidden treasures, and camping under the stars.

His faith was a cornerstone of his life. James was a deeply spiritual man and an active, devoted member of Second Baptist Church of Matawan where he faithfully served as a trustee and an officer of the Men's Ministry.

James will be remembered for his boundless generosity, his loving and devoted nature, and his friendly and loyal spirit. He was known for his wisdom, his hard work, and his giving heart, often sharing bountiful baskets of fresh vegetables from his garden. His family and friends will forever cherish the memory of his signature "thumbs up," the familiar "beep beep" of his truck horn, and the captivating stories he loved to share.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. James is survived by his loving children, Debora Ann Nelson and Eric James Butler (Charlene). He was a proud grandfather to Brittany Nelson, Julia Butler, Erica Butler, and Heather Bethune, and a doting great-grandfather to Gianna Nelson, Colson Bethune, David Bethune, and Kiara Bethune. He is also survived by his dear sister, Pauline Rice (Richard) and his brother, Rickey Butler (Chakela); a loving companion Gloria Thompson; and a host of relatives and friends.

  1. Ron Galassa says:

I was the Dollar Tree manager and Mr Butler would come in and light up the store with his smile. He always called me “the hardest working man in Matawan”. I appreciated those words more than he knew. For a hard working man like him to acknowledge me that was special. I enjoyed talking to him. He will be welcomed into the Kingdom of the Lord.
