Delphine Matilda Hughes-Clax was born July 5, 1932, in Perth Amboy, NJ from the union of the late Montague and Amanda Hughes. She departed this life on November 9, 2023. She was the fifth child with seven other siblings. She grew up in Cliffwood, NJ and was affectionately called “Dellie” by family and friends.  Dellie attended Cliffwood Elementary School and graduated from Matawan High School class of 1952.  After graduating, she was employed at Maiden- form garments in Perth Amboy, NJ.

Dellie married William A. Clax and from this union three daughters were born, Judith, Rosalind and Lori.

Dellie retired from Maiden form and became a child caregiver for her own children and those who needed her service.

Dellie was caregiver and nurturer for over 200 children throughout Aberdeen/Monmouth County areas. They ranged from diapers - early school years. She was their beloved “Mrs.Clax.”

In the later years she was also joint caregiver for her sister Iry.

She was past member of St. Mark Sewing Club, past member of St. Mark Adult Choir, past President of St. Mark Ushers, past St. Mark Class Leader, past member of Monmouth Adjacent Counties Mass Choir.  In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting for charity, completing circular word puzzles and spending time with her sisters fixing jigsaw puzzles.

She is predeceased by her parents Amanda and Montague Hughes, her spouse William A. Clax, her siblings/in-laws Evangeline Curry/Twille, Cedric Hughes/Doris, Iry Williams, and Lillian Hughes and good friends Christine May, Barbara Anderson.

Dellie is survived by her children Judith Cabbell, Rosalind Davis, and Lori Clax; two grandsons, David Alexander Cabbell, and Devin Brendan Davis; siblings/in-laws Beateal Gumbs (Earle), Emily Armstrong, James Hughes (Wilma), and Ephraim Hughes, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and good friends Sadie Gumbs, Eleanor Richardson and Edith Moultrie.

We give thanks to God for bringing her safely to this stage of her life... To God Be the Glory!!!!!
