Gregory Scott Owens transitioned peacefully On Friday February 7, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio where he lived for more than 20 years. Gregory was born January 21,1965 at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ to the late Raymond Owens Sr. and Constance Shaw. He attended Long Branch High School graduating in 1983.
Gregory Scott Owens, lovingly known as Jamil, was the neighborhood (self-taught) barber for many years. Gregory was kind, loving and enjoyed making people laugh. He was our family comedian. He was also known for his love of oldies music. Whenever he visited New Jersey, he always made his presence known and made memories. Gregory enjoyed being around his family and friends. If he could have given the world to his children, he would have.
While we will miss him terribly, we find comfort in knowing that he is in a better place. He lived boldly, loved deeply and left a mark that will never fade.
He is predeceased by his parents Raymond Owens Sr. and Constance Shaw, sisters Donna Shaw and Pax (Boo) Owens, brothers Kevin (Kevy) Owens and Donnie Clark.
He is survived by his beloved son Jamar Pitts, granddaughter La’Miyah Pitts; daughter Janelle Sotikare (Oyewole Sotikare), granddaughters Ny’Keema Carter, Nyasia Carter, and Iyanuoluwa Sotikare; daughter Jenise Pitts, (Troy Bigelow), grandchildren Naheen Jackson, and Asani Jackson; son Jamil Pitts (Shavany Gonzales), granddaughter Sophia Pitts, and his baby girl Brayla Owens; his sisters Leslie Ojo ( Adedeji), Jolynn Shaw-Boyd and Melissa Clark; his brothers, Emanuel Jones, Anthony Jones, Raymond Owens Jr, Derek (Derky) Owens and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
