SERVICE DETAILS
Alice Louise Brown Figgs, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, surrounded by love and family. She was 96 years old.
Born on February 21, 1929, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Alice was the second daughter of Clifton Brown Sr. and Lula Belle Brown. She graduated from James B. Dudley High School and went on to attend North Carolina A&T State University. In the late 1940s, Alice followed her sister Laura to New York, spending summers working domestically in Long Island. It was there that she met the love of her life, George Thomas Figgs. The two were married, and from their union came two children, Ronald and Georgette.
Alice had a strong work ethic and held various jobs throughout her life, but her most notable role was with the City of New York’s Finance Department. She rose through the ranks to become Associate Principal II before her retirement.
In retirement, Alice remained active and engaged, dedicating her time to travel, faith, and service. She was a proud and involved member of her union, Local 1180 of the Communications Workers of America, where she frequently volunteered. She also gave back generously to her community through other local organizations and causes.
Alice’s love for God was the foundation of her life. She accepted Christ at Raleigh Crossroads United Methodist Church in Greensboro, and in her later years, she was a proud member of John Street United Methodist Church in New York City, the oldest Methodist congregation in the United States.
A passionate traveler, Alice explored the world during her retirement years, visiting Europe, Israel, Egypt, the Caribbean, and many other remarkable destinations. Her adventurous spirit, wisdom, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Alice was predeceased by her parents; her husband, George T. Figgs; her brothers, Clifton Brown Jr. and Lloyd Brown; her sister, Laura Wall; her son, Ronald Figgs; her grandson, AJ Figgs; and her son-in-law, Eugene Motley Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted daughter Georgette Motley; grandchildren Nathan (Nicole) Sheard, Marlon Figgs, and Jennifer (Devin) Brown; daughter-in-law Irene Figgs; great grandchildren Keyron Sheard, Keyana Sheard, Joel Brown, Camryn Brown, and Ciara Brown; great-great grandson Keyron Sheard Jr.; sister-in-law Kathleen Brown; nephew Anthony Brown; nieces Florence (Daniel) Webster and Pamela Brown; lifelong special friend Dorothy Wallington; and a host of extended family and cherished friends.
Alice Louise Brown Figgs lived a life of grace, service, and deep faith. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
The Sides family, sends our condolences
