Dianne Delores Gibson Smith was born May 25, 1948, to the late Joseph and Pauline Gibson in San Francisco, California. As a child of a member of our military, Dianne's early life was shaped by her family's travels around the United States and the world. She lived in California, Germany, Japan, Alabama, and Illinois before settling in Red Bank, New Jersey.  Dianne graduated from Red Bank High School in 1966 and Bloomfield College in 1970. While at Bloomfield College, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in December of 1969. She continued her education at Rutgers University, receiving her master's degree in library science in 1972.

In May of 1972, she met Thomas Smith Jr. at the home of a mutual friend. After six months of dating, they were married on November 25, 1972. They were blessed with three daughters from this union: Kori, Keir, and Kaprece.

Dianne dedicated her professional life to education and librarianship working at various institutions including the Neptune Township Public Library, Stafford Township Elementary School, Neptune Middle School, and Bangs Avenue School in Asbury Park where she retired in 2006.

After retirement, Dianne and her husband enjoyed traveling the world.  Their recent adventures included trips to Portugal, Spain, England, France, St. Kitts, Dominica, and St. Martin.  In addition to traveling, Dianne enjoyed walking, going to the movies, dancing, and reading.

A woman of strong community spirit, Dianne was actively involved in organizations, including the Monmouth County Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Monmouth County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., the Monmouth County Cotillion Committee, and the New Jersey Chapter of the Circle-Lets, Inc. She was also a longtime member of Shrewsbury Avenue AMEZ Church, where she found spiritual guidance and support throughout her life.

Dianne was known for hosting guests at her home, especially children.  There are many children of family, friends, and neighbors who spent significant time "at the Smiths."

Dianne was an especially giving person, often extending herself to others. Whether it was a person who needed furniture due to a fire or a child who needed clothes, books, or toys, she was always there to help.  That need to help was instilled in her by her parents.

She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Pauline Gibson.  She is survived by her husband of 52 plus years, Hon. Thomas S Smith Jr.; daughters Kori Smith, Keir Smith Martin (Omar), and Kaprece Smith (Vernon); her grandson Jordan Leftridge; her godchildren, Karl Crudup II, Brooke Gillespie (Brian), Quentin Longino, and Travis Seawright; as well as a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Shrewsbury Avenue AME Zion Church.
