SERVICE DETAILS
Dorothy Mae Pickett 94 departed this life on Saturday, December 30, 2023, surrounded by her family and loved ones after a lengthy illness.
Dorothy was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 11, 1929. Dorothy and her sister Margaret traveled throughout the south with their mother, Mae Liza Butts. She was later adopted by Sallie Smith, who was a travelling evangelist. While their adoptive mother traveled, both daughters attended The Jenkins School in Charleston, South Carolina where they often sang and performed to raise money for the school.
Dorothy and her family later moved to Neptune, New Jersey where she attended the Neptune Township School system.
Dorothy married the love of her life on March 11, 1947. From this union they had five children: Edward Jr., Sharon, Wanda, and twins Robert and Robin. Dorothy worked at Hirsch manufacturing as a seamstress before transitioning to home health care with the Excellent Care Nursing Registry.
Dorothy had a keen eye for fashion and was a thrift store afficionado. She was stylish and always wore beautiful shoes.
Dorothy was predeceased by her late husband of 44 years, Edward E. Pickett, Sr. and her daughter, Wanda Reevey, son, Edward Pickett, Jr., and her only sister Margaret E. McAllister.
She leaves to mourn her loss daughters Sharon Stevenson and Robin Pickett along with son Robert Pickett; Grandchildren Monika Pickett, Curtis Showers, Aatif Ghafur, Johari Barber, Rafiq Pickett, Jaron Reevey, Antony Pickett, Jasmine Graham, and Mark Graham; Great-grands Kyle, Isaiah, Jordan, Aiden, Curtis Jr., and Bryce; Great-great-grands Jaelynn, Keegan, Carter, and Cruz.
We want to thank our in-house family nurse Jessica Richards for filling in the gaps. She also had two very special nieces Carolyn Washington and Gail Navarro as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Dorothy’s life mottoes were “I won’t complain,” and “I’m not as good as some and not as bad as others.”
Rest well Mom, your life blessed three generations of family and friends.
I’m sorry I didn’t spend more time with you Nana rest in peace
To The Pickett Family,
