OBITUARY
SERVICE DETAILS
Leland Thaddeus Washington, known lovingly to many as “Tad,” was born on November 10, 1960, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to parents Frank Thomas Washington and Virginia Ruth (Lawson) Washington. He was called home suddenly on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Newark, NJ.
Leland left this world with a spirit that embodied both resilience and freedom. Despite many challenges in life, he always strived to live life on his own terms. Those who knew him will remember his infectious smile and the captivating charm that was both endearing and cautionary.
Leland excelled in sports, especially football; playing wide receiver for Milford Academy, formerly Yale Preparatory School, originally located in Milford, CT now located in New Berlin, NY. He was a gifted athlete like his father Frank T. Washington and a die- hard Cowboys fan.
Leland believed that he was God’s gift to the ladies. In many ways he was, since he was charming, good-looking and had charisma which was undeniable.
During his adult life Leland had the opportunity to work as a claims examiner for Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and as a salesperson for The Metropolitan Plant Exchange, where he developed an interest in plants.
As we reflect on his life, we celebrate Leland’s unwavering spirit and the moments of joy he brought to those around him, especially his daughters Eileen and Crystal. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Leland is preceded in death by paternal and maternal great grand parents, grandparents, parents Frank and Virginia Washington, his oldest daughter Eileen Stevens and wife Beulah Washington.
He is survived by his youngest daughter Crystal Washington, brothers Kyle and Mark Washington, three grandchildren Ahmera Stevens, Itayasia Berry, and Nasmir Jones, seven great grandchildren, former wife Felicia (Lisa) Washington and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Dear Washington family
We are thinking of you in this time of sorrow. Leland, my cousin, will be missed by many, as He was quite a personality! How sad it was to hear about his passing. I will remember the last time I saw him was when my mom passed, as he made his way to our home to give his condolences. I’ll never forget Tad and I know we all share important memories growing up with him. God bless you.
with Sympathy,
Carla and Ray Johnson
Dear Tadpole,
Thank you for being my cousin and my friend. You were so talented, funny, kind, and relaxed. Though the road traveled was filled with adversities you always seem to have a positive face whenever I saw you. Now you are home with your wife and daughter. Rest in peace cuz. I look forward to seeing you again.
REST PEACEFULLY IN GOD’S LOVING ARM’S MY SPECIAL FRIEND.
During our Washington family ancestry search last year we were blessed to identify some of our Washington family in N.J., S.C., Florida, and other parts of the U.S. I never had the opportunity to meet Leland Thaddeus Washington, but I’ve come to learn he was our cousin, and it makes me sad to know that we’ve lost a branch of our family tree💔 May he rest in sweet peace…🙏
Our thoughts and prayers are with Leland’s family and dear friends. ✨️
