Melody Gaddis, 92 years old, of Red Bank, departed this life on Tuesday, April 19th at Hackensack Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation at Shrewsbury. She was born on December 15, 1929, to Randolph and Clara Daniels.

Melody was a lifelong Red Bank resident, having grown up and attended the Red Bank Public School system. Melody served as the matriarch of her large family, taking care of, and supporting her siblings even as a young woman. After school, Melody began working domestically. She then went on to work as a bus aide, then a cafeteria aide in the school. Finally, she worked at Laird’s Distillery. Melody retired from Laird’s after working there for over 20 years.

Melody was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was known for being very sweet and loving to everyone. Melody was the peacekeeper in the family, never one to say an unkind word about others or raise her voice. She made each of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and even in-laws feel like they were her favorite. Affectionately called “Aunt Mel” or “Mel”, by family and friends, she was sure to hand you an especially personally chosen gift at Christmas or have your favorite food ready to eat if you visited (just ask her great-grandson, Manny).

Melody loved to play cards and did so in weekly card games with her siblings. She also kept her mind sharp by watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy every single night for many years. She loved Sudoku, Word Search, and jigsaw puzzles (and one of her brothers would always hide one piece so that he could put the last piece in!). Most weekends, you could find her at the Monmouth Mall where she got her hair freshly done every Friday (courtesy of her loving daughter, Sandra). Every third Saturday (and more if she could get there!) you could find Melody in her very favorite place, Atlantic City, where she would play the slot machines.

Melody was predeceased by her parents, Randolph Sr, and Clara Daniels, sisters Sarah Jackson and Minnie Daniels, brothers Willie, James, Bernard and Randolph Daniels, husband, John (Jack) Gaddis, Sr., as well as her devoted sons, Frederick (Gregory) and John Gaddis, Jr.

Melody leaves to mourn her two loving and benevolent daughters, Inez Nedrick, Red Bank and Sandra Jackson (James), Flourtown, PA; daughter-in-law, Janice Gaddis, one sister, Beatrice Powell, Red Bank; three brothers, Albert Daniels, Red Bank, Frederick Daniels (Edna), Long Branch, Abe Daniels (Pam), Salisbury, NC; six grandchildren, Keisha Gaddis, Red Bank; Robert Hills, Jr., (Sayscha) Shrewsbury, NJ; Chanel Hills, Ocean Gate, NJ; Erica Nedrick, Brick, NJ; Sandra Kim Gaddis Pena (Radhames), Leonia, NJ; Akin Inaj Gaddis, Philadelphia, PA; five great-grandchildren, Isaiah Prentis, Manuel Joseph, Diamond Jada, Chase Gregory, Gabriel Sebastian, and Natalia Sophia; one great-great grandchild, Ava Rose and a multitude of family, friends and caretakers.
