Sandra Johnson was born on December 18, 1959, to the late Otha and Elizabeth Johnson. Raised in Lakewood, New Jersey, Sandra attended the Lakewood School System, where she excelled in basketball, field hockey, and softball. Her athleticism reflected qualities that would define her throughout her life—strength, determination, discipline, and an unwavering drive to succeed.
After graduating from Lakewood High School, Sandra continued her education at Georgian Court University. Inspired and motivated by her cousin, Lee "Sonny" Davis, Sr., Sandra made the life-changing decision to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1981.
Sandra served as a Security Forces Craftsman and received extensive training in law enforcement, military police operations, supervision, and leadership. During her career, she was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington; Clark Air Base on Luzon Island in the Philippines; and Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia.
Her service placed her at the center of significant moments in American military history. Sandra served during periods of conflict that included the Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan, and her two decades of military service took her throughout the United States and overseas.
One especially distinguished assignment was Sandra's service as part of the special security detail for the Tuskegee Airmen — an honor that connected her own military legacy with that of the legendary African American aviators whose courage and service helped transform both the United States military and the nation.
Throughout her career, Sandra earned numerous military decorations and honors, including the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Overseas Long and Short Tour Ribbons, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and additional commendations recognizing her distinguished service.
After exactly 20 years and 12 days of military service, Sandra retired from the United States Air Force in 2001. To her brother Otha, she was more than a sister — she was his hero. Her courage, independence, accomplishments, and commitment to serving her country gave him a sister he could always be proud of.
Beyond the uniform, medals, and accomplishments was a woman who loved deeply. Family held a special place in Sandra's heart. She gave extraordinary love and care to her niece and nephew, Yahmal Johnson, Sr. and Yashica Decker, whom she loved and cared for as her own children. Their bond went far beyond titles and reflected the depth of Sandra's love and devotion to family. Anyone who knew Sandra also knew that her beloved pets, Marley and Leo, were part of her family and held a very special place in her heart.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Otha and Elizabeth Johnson, and her siblings, Ernestine Johnson and Karl Johnson.
Those who will forever cherish her memory include her brother, Otha James Johnson, Jr.; her sister, Theresa Johnson; her truly adored nieces and nephews, Shontell White, Nickeya Gordon, Yahmal Johnson, Sr., Yashica Decker, Shakeema Martin, Ernest Campbell, Rachael Campbell, Kei-Onna Ventura, Lascell Campbell, and Glen-Nyce Donaldson. She will forever be remembered by a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, fellow veterans, and dear friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Sandra treasured the relationships she built throughout her life, and many of her friendships endured across decades. Among those cherished friends was Tia Gaines, whose friendship with Sandra began during their years at Lakewood High School and earned Sandra the nickname "Stony."
Sandra also shared close friendships within her Holiday City community, including Joan Chraytoni, Karen Powell, Mary Pagnotta, and Johnny Pagnotta. Her friendships were not measured merely in years, but in loyalty, shared memories, laughter, presence, and love.
Sandra was also a woman of faith whose commitment to serving others extended beyond her military career and family life. She was a member of Rivers of Life Online, where Apostle M. Queeni Green serves as Senior Pastor. Sandra faithfully supported the ministry and generously supported the church's youth initiatives and the Feeding Families program, reflecting her compassion and desire to make a meaningful difference in others' lives.
From the athletic fields of Lakewood to military installations around the world, Sandra lived a life marked by strength, courage, loyalty, service, and love. She served her country with honor, protected others with distinction, cherished her family, impacted communities, and cultivated friendships that lasted a lifetime.
TSgt Sandra Johnson's earthly journey ended on August 28, 2026, but her impact will live on through everyone who loved her, learned from her, served beside her, and was blessed to call her family or friend.
Sandra was a beautiful soul. Her kindness and calmness was contagious and inspiring. My little daughter Molly really enjoyed her company. Sandra came to some of her theater shows and was always so sweet and supportive. She was a great friend to my parents and we will all miss her tremendously. May we all live more like Sandra – kind, strong, brave, gentle, and genuine. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
